George Turner Models: a brief history

George Turner

After leaving art college in 1972 George joined Lesneys (Matchbox) as a model maker and designer working mainly on Yesteryear, Kingsize and Matchbox 1.75 ranges. In 1980 large parts of Lesneys were closed and with this came redundancy, so George went freelance and quickly built up a strong reputation as a highly skilled prototype model maker and designer. He worked in the 80's for many toy firms including Merit where he designed and produced many prototype pre-school toys - Thomas the Tank Engine and Postman Pat being two. Matchbox also continued to use his talents up until the Mattel buy-out and eventual move of Matchbox to the USA in the late '90's.

In the early '80's Jack Odell the co-founder of Matchbox started a new toy company called Lledo and Jack called on George's talents to design and produce his prototypes. Every single model from Lledo started its life in George's workshop and even after the Corgi takeover George still produces the majority of Days Gone, Trackside and Vanguard prototypes.

Corgi is also a regular customer of GTM, with George working on prototypes of cars, lorries, trucks, tanks, buses, trains and figure work including the Postman Pat and Noddy ranges, including the Noddy vehicles. Apart from the first five 1.144 scale planes every single Corgi Aviation Archive has started its life in the GTM workshop, these are mainly the responsibility of Richard Colvert who joined George full-time after leaving university. His knowledge on aircraft is immense and his ability as a model maker second to none.

With over 45 years of model making experience between them there is hardly an area of toymaking they cannot handle, be it diecast, plastic or resin cars, planes, trucks, trains, buses, figures or pre-school character merchandise they can do it.

Over the years GTM have diversified into producing their own products on a limited run basis. This first started with GT Model Petite in 1988, this was a range of 1.64 scale resin model cars of very high quality and these superb little models are highly sought after and some are very rare. George also produced a 1.43 scale limited run resin model of the Thomas Cheetah sports car, this model is still highly regarded and has been known to fetch hundreds of pounds on e-bay.

Recently GTM has started to produce their own range of limited run highly detailed hand-built resin and pewter model aircraft, these can all be viewed on this site. These models are of the highest quality on the market in both research and finish.

George now also indulges his other passion for model boats producing a range of models from fast-electrics, speed boats to canal boats, RAF crash tenders, cabin cruisers etc. George also designed the mono 1 Eagle which has dominated mono 1 class racing in this country over the past 3 years. This range is increasing all the time as is the GTM range of resin figures.
